High Power Transformer

A power transformer has a high voltage winding section sandwiched between its inner and outer low voltage winding sections. A number of pancake coils make up the low voltage windings, and a number of conductor strands spirally wound for a number of coil layers make up the high voltage windings. The low voltage windings are positioned next to the high voltage windings and are laterally separated from the high voltage winding sections. In comparison to the low voltage windings, the high voltage windings have lower turn heights and smaller gauge conductor strands than the pancake coils of the low voltage windings.

A power transformer is a piece of electrical equipment that uses electromagnetic induction to move energy between two or more circuits.

A changing magnetic flux in the transformer’s core and a changing magnetic field impinging on the secondary winding are both caused by a changing current in the primary winding. The secondary winding’s electromotive force (EMF) or voltage changes as a result of the secondary’s fluctuating magnetic field. Transformers can therefore be designed to efficiently change AC voltages from one voltage level to another within power networks by utilising Faraday’s Law along with high magnetic permeability core properties.

Transformers come in a variety of sizes, from RF transformers with a volume of less than one cubic centimetre to power grid connectors that weigh hundreds of tonnes. Transformer designs come in a variety of shapes and sizes for use in electronic and electric power applications.
